Heather Davis, a member of the women's eights crew, started rowing in university at age 19 at the University of British Columbia after a fine high school basketball career. She switched to rowing because she didn't like the basketball coach at UBC.

"Rowing looked so beautiful that I decided I wanted to try it," said Davis, who is looking to pursue a career in marine biology. "One of the biggets challenges is determining whether you want to get up at 5:30 a.m., everyday. I actually didn't even make my first crew but I found out afterwards that a lot of women on the Olympic team also failed their first try-out."

Davis missed the cut for a berth on the Olympic team in 1996. In 1997, torn cartilage in her sternum kept her off the water for six months. She won bronze in women's eights at the 1998 world championships and was fifth in fours at the 1999 worlds.
