A former national team 800-metre runner, Heather McDermid switched to rowing at age 24 in 1993 when a stress fracture in her ankle put an end to her track and field career. She was on a scholarship at Rice University and was named All American in 1989 and 1990.

"They told me I could never run competitively again," said McDermid, a member of Canada's silver medal winning eights squad at the Atlanta Olympics who'll race eights again in Sydney. "So I tried rowing and with my conditioning and strength I felt comfortable with it. Plus I knew how to compete. The biggest change for me was going from an individual to a team oriented sport."

Sports is a big part of the McDermid household. Her sister was also on the national track and field team and her brother is a former member of men's national volleyball squad. Her father played professional hockey in Europe and her mother also excelled in track and field.
