A member of the eights team since 1997, Dorota Urbaniak feels the biggest challenge in rowing is the commitment to the sport. "You have to sacrifice other areas of your life," she said. "Whether it's personal or work-wise. I took a leave of absence from work for 18 months as a court officer. We've all gone through some tough times financially. However it's all been worth it."

Urbaniak moved to Canada at age nine from Poland in a difficult procedure which required a stay over in Malmo, Sweden. Her parents didn't speak any English and rebuilt their careers and are both in real estate.

"As a young child, I didn't see the transformation as much with the move," she said. "I have great childhood memories of Poland. But I returned in 1994 and it didn't feel like home anymore"
