Australia 6, Russia 3

Australia doubles up on Russia

RYDE, Australia (AP) -- Bridgette Gusterson scored two second-half goals, including the one that put Australia ahead to stay in a 6-3 victory over Russia at the Sydney Games.

The Australian women, who had beaten Kazakstan 9-2 in the first-ever women's Olympic water polo match, had a more difficult time in this one Sunday (Saturday night EDT).

Gusterson, though, pulled them through, scoring twice in under three minutes. She struggled with Elena Toukoun in close to the goal, finally breaking free and skipping the ball into the net as the Aussies went up 4-3 with 52 seconds left in the third quarter.

Melissa Mills tipped in a pass from Browyn Mayer for another Australian goal and Gusterson, the team captain, finished things with a power shot that chunked off the left sidebar before going in.

That delighted another packed crowd of Aussie crazies at the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Center.

Taryn Woods also had two goals for Australia.

The Australians, at 2-0 in the tournament, face Netherlands on Monday (Sunday night EDT). The Russians, 0-1-1, take on the United States later that day (Monday morning EDT).
