Yzerman ready for 'chance of a lifetime'
By DON BRENNAN -- Ottawa Sun
Steve Yzerman has every intention of playing this week.
The Detroit Red Wings captain skated at the Corel Centre yesterday morning, then declared himself pain-free and about ready to face the Habs in Montreal tomorrow.
Yzerman, an important part of Team Canada, had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Jan. 28.
"It feels pretty good," Yzerman said prior to the Red Wings-Senators game. "I've skated a little more and a little harder each day ... Thursday, Friday and (yesterday) ... and it's not swelling and it's not sore after.
"I'm generally pleased. I'll practice (today) and play (tomorrow)."
Team Canada officials have been concerned Yzerman won't be 100% by the time the club plays its first game Friday against Sweden. But the Nepean native said his recovery period is on schedule.
"With the procedure I had, there's usually a 10-21 day timetable, and it will be two weeks Monday, so I'm right on schedule," said Yzerman, who also plans to play in Minnesota Wednesday. "I definitely want to get in a couple of games before I go. I want to be in shape when I get there.
"For the most part, this is a chance of a lifetime," added Yzerman, who will be an assistant captain on Team Canada. "Everyone is really looking forward to it."
