Olympian Scott Young will have surgery
ST. LOUIS (CP) -- Blues winger Scott Young had surgery on his left eye Thursday to fix a torn retina, abruptly halting his best scoring streak of the season and possibly keeping him out of the Olympics.
Young, who took a stick blade to his eye late in Tuesday's game at San Jose, was flown back to St. Louis from San Jose on Wednesday, and Blues doctors found corneal abrasions and a tear in the retina of his left eye.
"It's a tough blow," Blues coach Joel Quenneville told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Scotty had everything going in the right direction. He was hot as a firecracker."
Recovery from the surgery will take at least two weeks or as long as four weeks, possibly jeopardizing Young's place on the U.S. Olympic team.
Craig Conroy of the Calgary Flames, Scott Gomez of the New Jersey Devils and Mark Parrish of the New York Islanders would be among the possible replacements.
Young had scored six goals in the Blues' previous six games before getting hurt.
