Canuck luge growth's on track
By CAMERON MAXWELL -- Calgary Sun
The Canadian luge team is about to get a good idea how well it could do at the Olympics.
With the start of today's Viessmann World Cup at Canada Olympic Park, the young Canadian contingent is set to battle the world's best as the Road to Salt Lake City begins.
With the Olympic roster virtually set, except for the third men's position which will be decided in a race-off later this month between Kyle Connelly and Jeff Christie, the athletes are focusing on refining their skills instead of worrying about making the Olympic team.
"We are excited about the potential of our young team in this World Cup and the upcoming Olympics," said Brian Griffin, head of the Canadian Luge Association.
"This race should give us a good indication of how close we are with the (world) powers in luge."
Canadian officials are hoping for top-10 finishes this weekend, especially from the likes of Tyler Seitz, who was 12th last year on the World Cup circuit, and Regan Lauscher, who wound up 15th on the women's circuit.
"I know Tyler has been eighth before and would like to get a top-five result and Regan would be very happy to make top-10," said CLA co-ordinator Tim Farstad.
More than 100 athletes from 35 countries are competing, starting with today's Challenge Cup, a cash-grab event featuring the top qualifiers, where no world cup points are earned.
