Team Colors and Logo also announced
SAN JOSE -- Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment President & Chief Executive Officer Greg Jamison and San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Gregg Olson announced today that the Sharks new American Hockey League franchise in Cleveland will be named the Cleveland Barons.
SVS&E has obtained the rights for use the Barons name and logo for use with the Cleveland franchise, the Sharks top development affiliate.
"We are pleased to tie in a historically significant name such as the Barons with the Sharks colors and a mascot that has been extremely successful in the NHL," said Jamison. "We looked at many options, but Barons was our top choice from the beginning".
The name Barons has been a part of Cleveland hockey for nearly four decades, including three teams and two leagues (AHL and National Hockey League). Between 1938 and 1964, the Cleveland Barons (AHL) captured nine (9) Calder Cup Championships.
The new Barons logo will feature a shark wearing a top hat, tuxedo jacket and a monocle in the colors Baron blue, ice gray and top-shelf gold.
The Sharks moved their top development affiliate to Cleveland after purchasing the Kentucky Thoroughblades franchise on May 22.
One of the most dominant teams in the AHL over the past five seasons in terms of on-ice success and prospect development, the Thoroughblades enjoyed five consecutive trips to the Calder Cup Playoffs. Over the past two seasons under the guidance of Head Coach Roy Sommer, the Thoroughblades compiled an impressive 84-50-21-5 record and captured back-to-back Division titles (Mid-Atlantic Division in 1999, Southern Division in 2000). In addition, the franchise served as the development ground for several current Sharks players, including last seasons NHL Rookie of the Year, G Evgeni Nabokov, G Miikka Kiprusoff, D Scott Hannan, RW Alexander Korolyuk, C Mark Smith and D Shawn Heins.
Opening night for the Cleveland Barons 2001-02 season is scheduled for October 5.
