Gordie Clark to head Sound Tigers hockey operations

June 27: Sound Tigers jersey unveiled

BRIDGEPORT, CT - Mike Milbury, General Manager of the New York Islanders announced today that Gordie Clark will serve as the Director of Hockey Operations for their AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Clark, a former AHL standout as a player and an NHL hockey operations and front office veteran, will assume his additional new duties immediately. Milbury announced that Gordie Clark will continue his responsibilities as the Assistant General Manager of the New York Islanders.

Born in Scotland and raised in Saint John, New Brunswick, the 46-year old Clark is in his fifth year with the Islanders after spending four years scouting for the Bruins, the last two as Director of Scouting. He was the first two-time All American at the University of New Hampshire. A Bruins draft pick in 1972, he played nine years of professional hockey including time in the NHL and WHA. Clark scored at least 25 goals in six different seasons in the American Hockey League and reached the 50-goal, 101-point plateau in 1981-82. Clark hoisted the Calder Cup as a member of the Maine Mariners in the 1978-79 season. He also spent time behind the bench serving as an Assistant Coach to Mike Milbury with Maine of the AHL and Boston of the NHL.

Milbury spoke for both the Islanders and the Sound Tigers about the selection of Clark as Director of Hockey Operations, a key position for a first-year franchise. "We are confident that under the direction of Gordie Clark, the Sound Tigers will be able to accomplish both of their missions: develop the Islanders young talent and be a team Bridgeport and the entire region can be proud of," Milbury explained.

Sound Tigers President and Founder, Roy L.M. Boe seemed equally pleased with the appointment. "Few hockey professionals understand the development process better than Gordie. Gordie knows what it takes for young players to succeed. In college, he went from the Most Improved Player to a two-season All American. His Calder Cup experience as a player and his experience behind the bench in the Stanley Cup Finals will prove to be a tremendous asset to our organization. He's the perfect guy to direct our on-ice operation," Boe added.

Both Milbury and Clark were each presented with a newly released Bridgeport Sound Tigers official game jersey by Boe. In a symbolic gesture illustrating the NHL/AHL affiliation between the Islanders and Sound Tigers, Milbury's jersey bore his NHL number, # 26, while Clark's jersey was adorned with his AHL number, # 15.

The Sound Tigers begin their Inaugural Season in the American Hockey League this Fall. They will play their 40 game home schedule at the new state-of-the-art Arena at Harbor Yard, which is expected to be completed well before the AHL begins its season in early October.
