Calgary, AB Canadian Airlines Saddledome

Daily Report

We left rainy Vancouver around 2 pm after all the equipment was safely packed away in those big white semis. With our buses loaded with pizza and other survival gear we steered our way out of Vancouver and onto Highway 1.

By noon on Monday after a fine sleep (there was no point in waking up any earlier) most everyone spent the rest of the trip watching the misty Rocky Mountains. We arrived in Calgary with plenty of time to relax or whatever, before tonight's show.

    Concert Review

We were privileged to meet Alanis prior to her show, it was brief but memorable, and she is very personable. We got a nice photo with her. She came to the room and met with everyone one on one, and signed autographs. Alanis hit the stage a bit late, around 9:20. The first three songs went by in a flash... we were up front shooting our photos. Alanis didn't have a whole lot to say between songs, aside from thanking the appreciative crowd. The show really got going with her song Hand in My Pocket, with the crowd singing along. The stage setting had batique covering on the speakers and the Tree of Life backdrop reflected Alanis earthiness.

For this tour I noticed that Alanis seemed more at ease on stage, not as frantic and in control of everything, the band, the crowd. I found in some of the songs the band playing drowned out her vocals.

The songs that really struck me were the last three of the main set, All I Really Want, it was a powerful version that the crowd got right into. You Oughta Know started out kind of quiet, and built up to a great finish to lead into Univited. This version had the keyboard player do a long piano solo intro to the song, Alanis vocals were very clear especially for a cavern like the Dome.

After returning to the stage for the first encore the crowd was roaring. "Thank You" was an excellent choice. The next song, "Ironic" had everyone singing along from start to finish.

For a second encore the band returned to do an acoustic set, "Unsent" was first which I thought highlighted Alanis great vocal talent. To lead into this song there was part of the video shown on the big screen behind the stage, the video showed more of the conversations between the two characters that are edited out of the final cut you see on TV.

Kinnie Starr opened the show, her most memorable song was the closing song, "Boys 23", she said that it meant that 23% of boys are all right. She seemed to have an unrefined edge to her singing that I found rather unique. Like me many in audience heard the music of Kinnie Starr for the first time tonight.
