Mel C fights depression

After enduring media reports that say she's a fat lesbian, Spice Girl Mel C is being treated for depression.

The BBC reports the 26-year-old singer (whose real name is Melanie Chisolm), has been prescribed anti-depressants to help her deal with the intense media scrutiny.

"It's an illness and nothing to be ashamed of. I hope that I can dispel the stigma attached to this condition," she told The Mirror.

When the Spice Girls first found fame, Mel C was dubbed "Sporty Spice" because of her athletic, trim figure, but tabloid photos of her on vacation showed she had apparently gained weight, the BBC said.

When her solo album came out earlier this year, she denied rumors that she was having an affair wth her personal assistant, Ying Yau. The BBC said she tried to laugh off the reports, but ultimately, she fell into depression.

As part of her treatment, doctors have advised her to lighten her work schedule, but Spice Girls just released their first new single in months and their third album, "Freedom," is coming out in November.
