How to look like a Spice Girl

By STEPHANIE McGRATH -- AllPop

TORONTO -- The Spice Girls are finishing up their third album, and with new music comes a new image.

AllPop recently spoke with Chase Aston, a make-up artist from England who helps make Scary, Sporty, Baby and Posh look beautiful.

Chase did the girls' make-up for the Brit Awards and for their mini-tour in England just before Christmas last year. He let us in some Spicy secrets - like what their new image is and what their new single is called.

"I've done the Spice Girls for the Brit Awards, which was great because I completely gave them a whole new image for that," Chase says as he leafs through his portfolio. "I've made them be themselves, but sleeker," he explains. "Lots of shimmer on the skin. Lots of shine, sheen on the body. Just to make them really, really modern."

Chase, who spends a lot of time doing the Girls' make-up as they dance around to their own music, has already heard a preview of their new single.

"It's fabulous," he says. "It's called 'Holler Holler'. It's funky and there's a bit of rap. It has an edge to it, it's a really good track. It's just one of those tracks you know will be a serious club track that you can sing and dance along to."

According to Chase, Mel B (Scary) plans to release a solo album in the near future, too.

The Spice Girls aren't the only pop stars whom Chase spends time with. Ex-Spice Girl Geri Halliwell and pop princess Britney Spears also went to Chase when they wanted an image change.

"Britney saw my work and she said, 'I want him to do my make-up for the cover [of Cosmopolitan]'," Chase says. "She was turning 18 and she wanted the new image. She wanted to be more polished and sleek and sophisticated."

"Same thing with Geri [Halliwell]. When Geri did the Cosmo cover, her management said, 'She's completely reinvented herself. She's got different hair it's a whole new wardrobe', etc., etc. And I just sort of went for a totally natural ... She's got these amazing blue eyes, and I just said let's just kill everything down on the skin, even it all out and really bring her eyes out. Really simple make up, but really lots of shimmer. And they were ecstatically happy as well."

Chase says that if Spice fans want to try the group's new look, they should experiment with shimmer sticks and a bit of glitter to see if they can carry it off.

"If you like a look your favourite pop star or actress or model is wearing, take that look -- it's only make up. If you don't like it, if it looks ugly, wipe it off and start again," Chase advises. "Sit where there's lots of light and play with the product. Get a look that works for you. Less is more, basically."
