Brit popsters add Spice to Billboard charts

Britain's newest flavor-of-the-month music sensations, The Spice Girls, have hit the number one spot on Billboard's singles chart, Reuters reports.

The groups song "Wannabe," No. 1 in more than 30 countries, captured the coveted top spot on Billboard's Hot 100 chart after a five week climb. It displaces Toni Braxton's "Un-Break My Heart" which held the top spot for 11 weeks.

The Spice Girls, whose five members are all in their late teens and early 20s, also saw their CD, Spice, debut as the best selling new release for the week ending Feb 9. That launched the CD to the No. 6 spot on the Billboard Album charts with sales of almost 82,000.

Spice's debut showing overshadowed new releases from Southern California punks the Offspring and Australia's teen-aged hard rock trio Silverchair.

No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom was back on top of the album charts selling 119,000 copies last week. Tragic Kingdom's 58-week total is 5.3 million copies sold. The soundtrack from the film "Gridlock'd" fell to number two after taking No. 1 last week.
