Steps - disco for the millennium
By STEPHANIE McGRATH
Steptacular
Steps
(Jive)
Listening to Steps' "Steptacular" is kind of like eating flavourful frozen yogurt: The music's light, guilt-free and pleasant. Unlike much of their pop-mates, listening to this group won't put you into sugar-shock.
The songs are catchy, breezy and fun - the kind you don't even have to listen to once before you can sing along with the chorus. The music is best described as disco for the millennium.
This British pop group provides a mature version of S Club 7's pre-teen tunes or the A*Teens mini-pop ABBA covers.
The album's best tracks include a cover of the Bee Gees "Tragedy", and the danceable "Last Thing On My Mind".
Like most dancey pop groups, the strengths lie in quick, catchy numbers, not in slower tracks such as "I Think It's Love".
The majority of the songs allow the girls -- Claire, Faye and Lisa -- to take the lead, which is a good idea and preferable to the few times "H" and Ian take control, as on "My Best Friend's Girl".
While Steps might not radically change the pop music world forever, they do provide some fun, painless pop songs.
