Spurs star Sean Elliott's jerseys stolen
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Two jerseys on display in honor of San Antonio Spurs star Sean Elliott were stolen Monday from the high school gymnasium that bears his name.
A Cholla High School custodian reported the jerseys, bearing Elliott's No. 32, missing from a display case early Monday. The jerseys were from Elliott's playing days at Cholla and the University of Arizona.
School principal Tom Scarborough said the jerseys were encased in glass and hung at least 10 feet over an entrance to the gymnasium. He said the thief smashed the glass and either climbed up or used a pole to snag them.
The school, located in Tucson, Ariz., hopes the jerseys will be returned before classes begin next Monday.
Elliott graduated from Arizona in 1989, the same year the high school gym was renamed in his honor.
Elliott, 32, helped the Spurs win the NBA championship in 1999, but missed more than 60 games last season after undergoing a kidney transplant.
He returned at the end of the season and became the first professional athlete to return after such surgery. Elliott has not decided whether he'll return to the Spurs this season.
"He's been a constructive citizen his whole life," Scarborough said. "It's just what we'd like every one of our youngsters to be."
