Everybody in the game wants to be there

By JIM LITKE -- Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) -- Going in, D. Wayne Lukas was convinced he had the most "dead-fit" thoroughbred in the Belmont. Coming out, he had a horse that was neither fit nor, thankfully, dead. With that mixed blessing, racing will have to make do for another year.

ELMONT, N.Y. -- This was supposed to be Charismatic's claim to fame, a triumphant celebration to boost the spirits and profile of the weary sport of kings.
Instead, yesterday's 131st running of the Belmont Stakes ended in tragedy as Charismatic crossed the wire third, then broke down in front of a Belmont Park record crowd of 85,818 and millions more watching on television.

    Stakes champ a homer

By ROB LONGLEY -- Toronto Sun
ELMONT, N.Y. -- After finishing ninth in the Kentucky Derby, trainer Scotty Schulhofer decided to bench Lemon Drop Kid for the Preakness, the second jewel of the U.S. Triple Crown.
Instead, he returned to his Belmont home to regroup and compete in the less-stressful Peter Pan Stakes.
