WHAT DOES VOLKL MEAN TO CANADIAN SKIERS?
According to Ron Warren of Volkl in Canada, it's "top quality. Durability. Paying a premium price for a premium product. The current customer is paying the price, but he knows there's value in our skis. We're seeing a change in how people view Volkl; it's not just about racing. With the success of our Vertigo line, I think we have some better value product down below at lower prices than skiers normally associate with Volkl."
WHAT'S THE BIG STORY FOR 2001?
"Our newest technology is called Energy Frame: two raised chambers running the length of the ski. The titanal topsheet is pre-shaped, and the core of the ski is pre-stamped. It's a very expensive process to make."

WHICH SKI ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT THIS SEASON?
"The G-41 Pro is an evolution from our successful off-piste skis such as the Cross Ranger, Cross Carver and last year's G30. It has a fat 80-mm waist, so it won't be an eastern ski. It's designed as a total powder ski, but like most Volkls it skis well on hardpack."

OTHER DEVELOPMENTS
  • Complementing the Energy Frame is the Energy Rail plate system. This plate rides atop the Energy Frame's raised chambers and does not hinder the ski's flex in any way. Positioning of the Energy Rail is adjustable, too. This unit is found only on the top-of-the-line P40 F1 Energy Rail giant slalom racing ski but can be purchased separately.

  • Volkl reported good success with its women's-only line last year. Using a special Fibercell core, the 20/20 Series is 20 per cent lighter and 20 per cent softer than comparable men's skis. All three skis in the 20/20 lineup have been updated.

  • A Volkl twin tip? Believe it or not, Volkl is on board with the New School freeski/pipe/terrain park rage. Its entry is simply called the V, and it features cool black and yellow graphics with a fibreglass-wrapped wood core.
