for Volunteer Leadership
Bill McEwen
Nominated by the Commonwealth Games Association of Canada
For more than 50 years, Bill McEwen has exemplified the meaning of volunteerism. His commitment and effectiveness are matched by his passion, enthusiasm, and fairness. Canada is the richer because this modest and gracious man loves sport, believes in its capability to enhance the lives of youth, and backs his beliefs with deeds.
McEwen established the Interprovincial Football League for junior players and became its first president. As a founding member of the Canadian Amateur Football Association, he played a significant role in writing its constitution and served as its president. In 1971, he became director and president of the B.C. Lions Football Club and was later named Honorary Governor. He was co-founder and director of the Ottawa Nationals of the World Hockey Association, a director of the Old Timers Hockey Association, a founder of the Alumni Association of the National Hockey League, a governor of Hockey Canada, and a director of the Vancouver Canucks Hockey Club.
McEwen, who was a finalist for the Bryce Taylor Award in 2000, has laboured tirelessly to effect change in amateur sport. Throughout his involvement in the 1960s with the National Advisory Council on Fitness and Amateur Sport, to his 30-year relationship with the Commonwealth Games Association of Canada (CGAC), he has led by example. He served the Canada Games Council, the Canadian Olympic Association, and Lotto Canada in leadership roles, and was a founder and later president of the Canadian Amateur Sport Council (later the Sports Federation of Canada).
