Jamie Salé and David Pelletier - Figure Skating

    Nominated by Skate Canada

When Jamie Salé and David Pelletier take to the ice, they mesmerize audiences and judges alike with their artistry, power of expression, and technical mastery. Headline makers since their international debut in 1999, they continued their meteoric climb with sensational performances in their second season together.

Eyes firmly on the world championships (going on right now in Vancouver), last August they unveiled their ambitious new free program, based on the classical opera "Tristan and Isolde." Designed to showcase their versatility, the new program differs dramatically from last season's "Love Story," which catapulted them from relative obscurity to world medal contention. Judging by the handsome marks recorded to date, the new program is a huge success.

Salé, a native of Red Deer, Alta., and Pelletier, from Sayabec, Qué., were unstoppable at Skate America. Second after the short program, every judge awarded them first-place ordinals for "Tristan and Isolde," ahead of the two-time world silver medallists Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao of China. At Skate Canada, they upset two-time world champions Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze and defending world champions Maria Petrova and Alexei Tikhonov. As well as defeating all the medallists from the 2000 worlds, they earned a spot at the Grand Prix final, standing first among all pairs in the world with the maximum of 24 points.

The talk of the skating world and beyond for their exquisite lifts, throws, and spirals, Salé and Pelletier skate as though they have always belonged together. Demanding perfection from themselves every day in practice, they seek every possible edge in their hunt for gold. Above all, they have the uncanny ability to dig deep and get the job done, calmly and confidently.
