On December 31, 1998 John McConachie of Ottawa retired after 27 years as the marketing genius for the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU).
"His success in building and selling CIAU properties has been the envy of many sports associations across Canada," said Kerry Moynihan, executive director of the CIAU.
"He's been a pillar of strength in promoting interuniversity sports. He's one of the best sports marketers in Canada and has left a great legacy."
McConachie's strength in the marketing world is directly attributable to his partnerships with a variety of CIAU stakeholders such TSN/RDS, the CIAU's Gold Plan partners and numerous official suppliers and sponsors.
The greatest symbol of McConachie' success is the emergence in recent years of the popularity of the Vanier Cup, the championship game in Canadian interuniversity football. It has become one of Canada's premiere sporting events.
