Bank of Montreal
Nominated by the Canadian Equestrian Federation and the Canadian Figure Skating AssociationThe Bank of Montreal's support for Canadian show jumping spans three decades. The bank's early involvement was the sponsorship of Calgary's Spruce Meadows in the 1970s; then a cattle feedlot, the venue has since become the top show-jumping facility in North America and possibly the second best facility in the world. The Bank of Montreal also sponsors Canada's two international show-jumping competitions (the Nations Cup), the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Horse Show in Toronto, and Ian Millar, Canada's top show jumper. Executives of the bank have provided leadership to the sport in key volunteer positions, and the bank administers the MasterCard affinity program for equestrian sport and has organized fund-raising events. The Bank of Montreal's sponsorship of the Nations Cup events has had a two-fold result: first, it has brought the excitement of world-class equestrian competition to Canadian audiences; second, it has allowed Canadian riders to compete and improve against the best in the world without the financial expense of travelling to Europe.
The Bank of Montreal is also the largest corporate sponsor of Canadian figure skating and is involved in programs ranging from grassroots activities such as the flagship learn-to-skate program Can Skate to the Bank of Montreal Canadian Championship. Beyond event sponsorship, the Bank of Montreal also plays a role in volunteer recruitment, and the bank's employees can be found patching the ice between events, hosting parents in the parents' lounge, and performing other essential volunteer tasks. In addition, the Bank of Montreal provides skating awards and assists young skaters in attaining their goals through a training bursary program.
