    Sporting Excellence and Community Values

A well-known Canadian business figure and sport entrepreneur, Johnny F. Bassett was an accomplished sportsman, who at age 20 was a member of Canada's Davis Cup Team. A strong believer in the benefits of sport to the character development of youth, he imparted his great love of sport, competition and fair play to his four children. In the mid-1980s his daughter Carling Bassett was among the world's top-ranked tennis players. This award is presented by the Department of Canadian Heritage of the Government of Canada to a citizen of the Canadian sport community who has displayed a combination of sporting excellence and community work. The recipient has accomplished humanitarian endeavours that best represent the true Spirit of Sport ideals of integrity, cooperation and respect for others.
