Nominated by the Canadian Hockey AssociationHeld in August 1999, the Molson Open Ice Hockey Summit brought together some of the greatest hockey minds in the country. Their task was to discuss the future of hockey in Canada and, in particular, new approaches to player development. Participants in the summit ranged from hockey greats such as Wayne Gretzky, Ken Dryden, and Scotty Bowman to minor hockey parents, coaches, administrators, and fans. Molson's financial, logistical, and organizational support of the Open Ice Summit clearly demonstrates the corporation's long-term investment in the development of Canada's national game. The Open Ice Summit received enormous media attention, beginning with the initial media launch in April, when Wayne Gretzky announced he would serve as the Summit's honorary chairman, to the summit itself. Press coverage continues today as many of the summit's recommendations are implemented and begin to change the development of players in the game of hockey in Canada.
