MONTREAL - How to buy holiday gifts? Make a list and check it at least twice, says David Wood, with the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals (CAIRP).

 

CAIRP trustees manage the assets of people who are in financial difficulty, so Wood has met with many Canadians who wished they had been wiser with their spending.

Wood said he often meets people who say "Geez, I've always been one to pay my debts on time and I can't believe I'm here."

Canadians should prepare a list of everything on which they will need to spend holiday money, Wood said, and stick to a budget that is within their means.

"People forget stuff," Wood said. "They say, 'Here is my shopping list for presents' and then realize they're also hosting dinner. And then they budget for turkey but forget about trimmings. That stuff can nickel and dime you to death."
