OTTAWA -

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty promises a balanced federal budget in 2015, but aboriginal protests against natural resource development projects may yet derail his projections.

Flaherty announced Tuesday that the feds had wrestled down this year's deficit to $18.9 billion, about $7 billion lower than projected.

"People probably think that's easy to do, but it's not that easy to do," he said.

Flaherty's projections remain vulnerable to economic disruptions.
