It may have been a year of celebrating the Queen and her 60-year reign, but younger royals grabbed headlines in 2012 for exposing their crown jewels and making babies.
Photos of Prince Harry in the buff, snapped in August while the young prince was in Las Vegas on vacation, appeared on the gossip site TMZ, and threatened to derail his grandmother's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Then, a month later, photos of Kate topless while on vacation with Prince William in France were published in the French magazine Closer.
The public decided, for once, the photographer went too far, and when the royals took legal action, they had overwhelming support.
"Those pictures were of bad taste, but they did not tarnish the royal family's image. In a way, they confirm the real attachment of the people for their royals," royal expert Estelle Bouthillier of Concordia University in Montreal said in an e-mail.
Among the more positive news from the palace, the Queen's granddaughter, Zara Phillips, won a silver medal at the Olympics in the equestrian team event, and the Queen herself took part in the opening ceremonies.
After series of successful royal tours of Commonwealth countries - including two to Canada - the year ended with the news the world has been waiting for: Wills and Kate are expecting a baby.
The royal pregnancy set up what could be an even busier 2013 for the Windsors.
"I am convinced that we will see lots of rejoicing and celebrations next summer," Bouthillier said.
