Durham takes the lead in auto education

Durham College is in the lead when it comes to automotive education. At the Whitby campus' School of Skilled Trades & Apprenticeship, students can choose from programs that include automotive technician service & management, automotive service technician apprenticeship, and partsperson apprenticeship.

Automotive technician service and management

This program will provide skills and training for a variety of careers in the transportation and automotive fields. As recommended by the automotive repair and service industry, graduates are prepared to enter the motive power trades with high skilled trade qualifications and essential business communication, marketing and interpersonal skills.

Students may complete year one of their studies at Loyalist or Durham College. Upon completion of the second year of study, available only at Durham College, students will receive an Automotive Technician and Service Management diploma.

Those who successfully complete and choose to leave at the end of the first year will receive a certificate in Motive Power Fundamentals -- Parts and Counter Personnel.

Graduates of this program may work in parts and service areas or may continue their studies as apprentices for:

  • automotive service technician
  • truck and coach
  • farm equipment
  • forklift mechanic
  • parts counter person/manager
  • service writer/manager

    Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship

Automotive service technicians inspect, diagnose, repair and service mechanical, electrical and electronic systems and components of cars, buses and trucks.

Automotive service technicians may be employed by motor vehicle dealers, garages and service stations, automotive specialty shops and retail establishments with automotive service shops. Experienced technicians and mechanics are often very successful as independent business operators.

Employment is available in union or non-union environments and in most communities, however, employment prospects are often best in urban areas.

This is a compulsory certified trade, meaning a certificate of qualification gained through apprenticeship training and examination is mandatory. This trade is also eligible for interprovincial red seal certification, ensuring the technician's credentials are honoured outside Ontario. Additional certification may be pursued to enhance knowledge or employment specialization.

The demand for knowledgeable people in this industry is at an all time high, and industry and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities has recognized the need for a Partsperson Apprenticeship Training program.

The program consists of 4,000 hours of training in industry and two 300-hour in-school training sessions at the Skills Training Centre.
