Like many young people today, Sandy
MacDonald wasn't sure what he wanted to do with his life when he graduated from high school.
After working in a bank and the circulation
department of a newspaper, he landed a job at Cliff Mills Motors in Oshawa, which led to an apprenticeship in automotive mechanics.
Up to 4,000 staffing service companies across Canada will celebrate Staffing for Canada Week from June 2 to 8. Congratulations will be extended to the more than 250,000 job seekers who found new employment during the past year through staffing firms, and to recognize the more than 300,000 temporary and contract workers who represent the industry every day.
The week also provides a forum to thank the personnel
professionals and consultants who help thousands of Canadians find new job opportunities every year.
To celebrate Staffing for Canada Week, local chapters of the Association of Canadian Search, Employment & Staffing Services (ACSESS) throughout the country will
organize various events for their employees and field staff, such as a 24-hour pick-up
hockey marathon, a
children's essay contest, a "win a week at camp" contest and a family day at the zoo.
In many cases, proceeds raised at these events are given back to the community as donations to local and national charities.
Staffing for Canada Week is a Canadian initiative that originated in 1980 in Edmonton as National Temporaries Week, and was quickly adopted in the
United States as National Temporary Help Week. This year, the week has been acknowledged by Prime Minister Jean Chretien and premiers across the
country.
