     The maturing process for Dale Earnhardt Jr. accelerated rapidly with the death of his father in the Daytona 500.

    Earnhardt's lap belt was broken

     ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Dale Earnhardt's lap belt was found to be broken after the stock car racing champion was fatally injured in a crash at the Daytona 500, NASCAR officials said Friday.
     "Mr. Earnhardt more than likely contacted the steering wheel with his face," Bohannon said.

    Fans remember Earnhardt at memorial service

     KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (AP) -- Dale Earnhardt's fans streamed into his hometown baseball stadium Sunday for a memorial service.
     About 5,000 people, most wearing the black-dominated gear of Earnhardt's racing team, braved a cool evening to attend the service at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.

     ROCKINGHAM, N.C. -- In a way, the stack of Busch Light beer cases outside Doug and Glenda Hall's camper serves as a tribute to Dale Earnhardt.

    Waltrip, Park remember Earnhardt

     ROCKINGHAM, North Carolina -- Michael Waltrip never got to celebrate his Daytona 500 victory. He never received all that comes with winning NASCAR Winston Cup racing's biggest event.
     Shortly after Waltrip pulled into victory lane after winning last Sunday's race, he was informed by fellow driver Ken Schrader that his team owner and fellow driver Dale Earnhardt was in grave condition after he crashed in the fourth turn on the final lap of the race.
