Wednesday, November 24, 1999 Nolan to coach national Aboriginal teamCALGARY (CP) -- The Calgary Sun reports former Buffalo Sabres head coach Ted Nolan has been hired by the Assembly of First Nations to head up a venture seeking to create an Indigenous Hockey program with an eye to icing teams for international competition."Similar to the Canadian team, we want to start a program of excellence with an under-18 team and then have teams at the World Juniors, (World Championships) and the Olympics," said Nolan, who met with associates from Sport Minister Denis Coderre's office in a preliminary bid to get the government onside with the project. "The 2002 Olympics might be rushing it -- if we can be there it would be great, but if not there's always the next Olympics." The likes of Sandy McCarthy, Chris Simon and Gino Odjick would play on such a team. Nolan, hired by national Chief Phil Fontaine to act as director of hockey operations for the upstart hockey federation, said he would definitely coach the team at the Olympics, should it gain entry to the tourney. "Obviously I want to coach at the NHL level -- I've never made that a secret -- but I haven't been given that opportunity," said Nolan, who coached the Sabres from 1995 to 1997. "Instead of sitting around whining about it, I'm doing something that can really make a difference."
