Biron NHL's player of the week

NEW YORK (CP) -- Buffalo Sabres rookie goaltender Martin Biron is the NHL's player of the week after going 3-0-0 with a 1.99 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage.

The 22-year-old from Lac St. Charles, Que., edged Philadelphia Flyers centre Eric Lindros (one goal, six assists in three games), Pittsburgh Penguins right-winger Jaromir Jagr (three goals, three assists in three games) and Colorado Avalanche right-winger Milan Hejduk (three goals, one assists in two games) for his first player of the week award.

Biron stopped 18 shots in a 3-1 road win over the Dallas Stars, turned away 23 shots in a 5-4 overtime win against Chicago and finished the week with 24 saves in a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders.

Biron, who has replaced injured starter Dominik Hasek, was the American Hockey League's top goaltender last season with Rochester.
