Monday, January 17, 2000Sabres 5, MIGHTY DUCKS 0Ducks not mighty on this nightANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Rookie Martin Biron grabbed a share of the league lead with his fourth shutout and Vaclav Varada scored twice as the Buffalo Sabres opened a four-game road trip with a 5-0 rout of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Biron stopped 17 shots, seven in the first and third periods and three in the second, and Miroslav Satan added an empty-net goal and two assists for the Sabres, who won for only the second time in their last seven games (2-4-1). They have won three in a row in Anaheim. "We're trying to get back to what was successful," Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff said. "Tonight, we played a pretty tight game. It was a real solid effort. The job we did through the neutral zone tonight was really outstanding. We got great goaltending again from our rookie. It was good to see a couple of chances go in. We definitely earned our breaks tonight." "(The Ducks) had a guy in the crease a lot tonight," said Biron, who improved to 16-11-2 on the season. "They were trying to block my view. Everybody did their job pretty much. Anybody could have been in the net tonight." Dominic Roussel made 26 saves as Anaheim was shut out for the fifth time this season, falling to 1-8-1 in its last 10 games. "There were a lot of positive things done the last three games but tonight was a pretty embarrassing," Mighty Ducks coach Craig Hartsburg said. "There are no excuses for the way we played. There is no place to hide. I was very disappointed in the effort and the intensity." All-Stars Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya, who lead Anaheim in scoring, were held to just one shot. "We weren't ready to play," Kariya said. "Our team is too loosey-goosey. We don't have the desire to be a good team right now." "We can't find anything positive tonight," Selanne agreed. "I don't think we can fall much deeper than we are right now. We're not a team that can just throw our sticks out there and expect to win. There's no easy way out. Everybody has to show more effort in this dressing room." After a scoreless first period during which Buffalo was held to four shots, Curtis Brown scored a power-play goal, his 15th, for the Sabres, finishing a 3-on-2 break stick side 21 seconds into the second. Ward tallied his fifth with 2:43 left in the second. He took a pass from the left boards around the top of the right circle and put in a slap shot past Roussel's stick. A little more than two minutes later, Varada notched his first goal since November 10 against Boston to give the Sabres a 3-0 lead. Ward made an excellent play, winning a battle for the puck along the right boards, swooping down around the net before feeding Varada in front. Varada put in his second of the game at 10:19 of the third. Michael Peca picked up the loose puck around the red line, made a quick pass to Varada, who snapped a shot low inside the left goal post for only his 15th career goal in 147 games. "I don't score often so to get two goals in a game is outstanding for me," Varada said. "I'm glad I could contribute in a big way." Satan notched his 23rd tally of the season with one second remaining, hooking the puck into the empty net.
