Satan's hat trick leads Sabres past Senators

  • Summary

KANATA, Ont. (CP) -- Miroslav Satan scored three goals and added two assists as the Buffalo Sabres downed the Ottawa Senators 7-4 Saturday night.

Curtis Brown had a goal and two assists, and Michal Grosek, Erik Rasmussen and Stu Barnes also scored for the Sabres. Jason Woolley collected three assists for Buffalo.

Daniel Alfredsson had a goal and two assists for the Senators, with Vinnie Prospal, Patrick Traverse and Shaun Van Allen also scoring.

Ottawa goaltender Ron Tugnutt had another rough outing, giving up five goals on 19 shots before being replaced by Patrick Lalime at the start of the third period with the Senators trailing 5-3. Tugnutt was also pulled in his previous two starts.

Satan opened the scoring on a breakaway 13:46 into the game to extend his points streak to six games.

Prospal tied it for the Senators 2:02 later when he scored while falling down in the slot.

Satan set up Grosek 1:20 into the second period to put the Sabres up 2-1.

Alfredsson was stymied by Buffalo rookie netminder Martin Biron on a penalty shot at 7:12 of the second, but scored 1:13 later when his intended pass deflected off a Sabres player and into the net.

Satan and Traverse traded goals 3:14 apart before the Sabres took the lead for good when Rasmussen and Satan scored in a 1:51 span to open up a 5-3 lead.

Brown and Barnes scored on power plays in the third period to make it 7-3 before Van Allen rounded out the scoring at 11:45.

     Buffalo outshot Ottawa 25-23.
