    SENATORS 4, Sabres 0

Hossa and Tugnutt send Sabres to another loss

  • Summary

KANATA, Ont. (CP) -- Marian Hossa scored two goals and added an assist, and Ron Tugnutt stopped 18 shots for the shutout as the Ottawa Senators beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-0 Saturday night.
Shawn McEachern and Steve Martins also struck for the Senators, who remained undefeated at the Corel Centre (4-0-1).
Tugnutt registered his 12th career shutout.
It was the first meeting between the teams since Buffalo swept Ottawa in the first round of the playoffs last season. It also was the second game of a five-game homestand for the Senators.
The rough start for Sabres goaltender Dominik Hasek (0-4-1) and the Stanley Cup finalists (1-6-2) this year continued, as the Sabres were out shot 30-9 after two periods and 35-18 overall.
Ottawa has lost only one of its previous 13 regular-season games against Buffalo (7-1-5). All five games between the teams last season reached overtime, with the Senators prevailing (1-0-4.)
Tugnutt (4-0-1) earned his 12th career win over Buffalo, his most against any team in the league.
Hossa scored at 15:18 of the opening period, netting his fifth goal of the season on a backhand from the slot.
McEachern, who had a career-high 31 goals last year, scored his first goal of the season 50 seconds later.
Defenceman Jason York found McEachern at the side of the Sabres' net and McEachern, acting as Ottawa's captain in place of injured Daniel Alfredsson, tapped the puck past Hasek while Hossa's goal was being announced.
Hossa assisted on the play, as Ottawa built a 13-4 shot advantage in the period.
Alfredsson injured his right knee in Ottawa's 4-1 win over Colorado Thursday, deepening the hole in the Senators roster left by contract holdout Alexei Yashin.
Hossa made it 3-0 with a backhand that trickled through Hasek's pads at 9:13 of the second period. Martins scored while off-balance in the slot two minutes later.
