Saturday, October 9, 1999Sabres 5, THRASHERS 5 (OT)Sabres scrambling in AtlantaATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Buffalo Sabres had to scramble to salvage a point against the expansion Atlanta Thrashers. Miroslav Satan scored his second goal of the game on a penalty shot 3:19 into the third period as the winless Sabres rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 5-5 tie. The defending Eastern Conference champions are off to an 0-2-1 start while the Thrashers completed a season-opening three-game homestand by recording the first point in franchise history. Atlanta combined for only two goals in its first two contests, a 4-1 loss to New Jersey and a 7-1 defeat to Detroit. Curtis Brown scored his second goal of the game to pull Buffalo within 5-4 at 2:07 of the third. The Sabres got a break 72 seconds later when Atlanta right wing Nelson Emerson was called for closing his hand on a puck in the crease. Satan, who signed a multi-year contract on Wednesday and made his season debut on Friday, deked Damian Rhodes to the ice and slipped a backhander behind the fallen goaltender. Rhodes finished with 27 saves. Top overall draft pick Patrik Stefan had two goals and an assist in a four-goal second period, when the Thrashers turned a 2-1 deficit into a 5-3 lead. After Andrew Brunette snapped a 2-2 tie at 5:45, Stefan scored his second goal of the night with 7:51 remaining in the period to make it 4-2 and chase a shaky Dominik Hasek, who surrendered four goals on 21 shots. Dwayne Roloson stopped seven of eight shots thereafter. Stu Barnes' power-play goal halved the deficit 2 1/2 minutes later, but Emerson scored with 1:59 left to restore Atlanta's two-goal margin. The start of the game was delayed briefly due to a lightning problem at Philips Arena.
