Fuhr has arthroscopic surgery on right knee

CALGARY (CP) -- Goaltender Grant Fuhr will be unavailable to the Calgary Flames for at least three weeks after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Tuesday.

Dr. Nicholas Mohtadi performed the procedure, which involved the successful removal of scar tissue and cleaning up rough surfaces in the knee.

The procedure was termed routine by Flames general manager Al Coates, who set Fuhr's recovery period at "not less than three weeks."

Fred Brathwaite will carry the bulk of the workload in Fuhr's absence, while Jean-Sebastien Giguere has been called up from the Saint John Flames of the AHL.

Fuhr, 37, has had problems with his knee ever since the 1996 playoffs when he was with the St. Louis Blues. Nick Kypreos of the Toronto Maple Leafs, barrelled into him during a post-season contest, forcing reconstructive surgery. It has flared up often since then.

Brathwaite is 8-7-2 with a 2.20 goals-against average and .923 save percentage. He's been getting most of the work of late.

      Fuhr is 5-9-2 with a 3.66 GAA and a .858 save percentage.
