    Flyers draw first sellout

    By The Calgary Sun

     Nothing builds interest like success.

The Flames' drive back into the NHL's Western Conference playoff picture has been pushing attendance figures -- dangerously low earlier on for the economic viability of this franchise in this market -- up of late. Yesterday's loss to the Philadelphia Flyers marked the team's first sellout of the season (17,145).

A combination of factors -- the 5 p.m. start, the only visit of Flyers' star Eric Lindros this season and, most significantly, vastly improved results by the home side of late have made the difference.

Calgary's previous home game, against the arch-rival Oilers, had drawn the then-highest crowd, 16,807.

Including yesterday's big turnout, the Flames are now averaging 13,935 in the 17,139-seat 'Dome.

In their last five home dates, the average crowd has been 15,689.

Tomorrow night should also be a big draw, with Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya, two of the game's most exciting players, here with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
