Flames show true grit in comeback

By LISA BURKE -- Ottawa Sun
The Calgary Flames are proof that hard work and determination can pay off.
Despite trailing 2-0 after the first period, the Flames rebounded to beat the Ottawa Senators 4-3 in overtime.
"We deserved to win," said Flames coach Brian Sutter. "Coming in, we were 1-3 on this road trip and should have been 3-1. This is the way we play every night."
The Flames' power play finally came to life after going 3-for-20 in their last four games on the road.
Phil Housley and Jeff Shantz' second-period goals were both scored with the man advantage.
"The power play got two big goals," added Sutter.
The Flames also got a huge four-point performance from Valeri Bure. The assistant captain tied the game midway through the third and set up the game winner.
"Bure is a take charge kind of guy," Sutter said. "He responds shift in, shift out."
Deflecting credit to his teammates, Bure said it was the team's ability to keep the game simple that allowed them to come back.
"We just keep rolling four lines," he said. "It's not new for us to be trailing, to get a lead in the first period would be new."
The Flames finish up their six-game road trip tomorrow night against the Eastern Conference-leading Toronto Maple Leafs, but feel last night's win will go a long way.
"We've had a tough time on this road trip," said Shantz. "We've been down early and had to battle back, but we've shown character.
"If we're going to win, we know we have to battle."
Shantz admitted the team didn't quite play to its potential in the first few games.
"It was too much run and gun," he said.
"Now we're back to playing defence-first hockey."
