Wednesday, September 29, 1999 New look for Grant
Grant Fuhr, understandably, collects masks. His own. "I'm up to, oh, 13 or 14 now," said the Flame goalie, studying his new mask, art work by Frank Cipra of Toronto. "One from L.A., three or four from St. Louis because we always seemed to be changing our uniforms. All the Edmonton ones. Frank's detail is incredible. "On one of my Blues' masks, I had piano keys and he made the black parts stand up from the rest of the mask. Like, 3D!" On another, Cipra had painted a brick wall, but there was relief wherever mortar had been detailed between the bricks. This new mask has the usual Calgary themes -- flames, the Rocky Mountains and that old western standby, horses. "I didn't want any horses," sighed Fuhr. "But Frank put them on anyway. I don't know whether we had a bad connection or what when we were discussing this. Doesn't matter. It's a great mask. Like always." As with all of his masks, Fuhr insisted on his name printed at the bottom of the front, with replicas of the five Stanley Cups he's won and crossed golf clubs on the back.
