![]() In Bill Guerin, the Oilers received a player who needed a change of scenery. He came to Edmonton on January 4 of 1997, along with Valeri Zelepukin in exchange for Jason Arnott and minor-leaguer Bryan Muir. Determined to prove his point after New Jersey GM Lou Lamoriello failed to initially select him for the 1998 U.S. Olympic team while he was on a contract hold-out, Guerin scored 13 goals and 29 points in 40 games. The fifth overall pick in the 1989 draft scored a career-high 29 goals with the Devils in 1996-97. As an Oiler, the power forward joins fellow U.S. Olympian Doug Weight. Showing great promise during a three-year schooling at Boston College (HE) and Utica (AHL), Guerin was given a permanent spot on the Devils' lineup in 1992-93 where he posted 34 points in 65 games. He had an even better sophomore season (44 points) in 1993-94, and was a key element in the Devils first-ever Stanley Cup win in 1995. For more on Bill Guerin, check out Hockey PLUS |
