![]() The veteran McSorley is a dedicated, blue-collar guy who has mainly earned his living as a tough-as-nails defenceman. Also a leader, McSorley will be asked to fulfill that role for a second time with the Edmonton Oilers, who signed him to a free agent contract prior to the 1998-99 season. Never drafted, McSorley--fresh out of Belleville of the OHL--first signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1982. He joined the Pens in 1983-84, but was traded to Edmonton the following year. McSorley was a member of two Edmonton Stanley Cup winning teams, 1987 and 1988, and built himself a reputation as Wayne Gretzky's official bodyguard. McSorley followed Gretzky as part of the famous blockbuster deal in 1988 that finally put Los Angeles on the NHL map. McSorley enjoyed his best NHL season in 1992-93, when he provided the Kings with 15 goals and 41 points while sitting out a league-leading 399 penalty minutes. McSorley remained in Los Angeles until the 1995-96 season--let aside a back-and-forth trade to Pittsburgh, each time in exchange for Shawn McEachern--when he was shipped to the New York Rangers in another multi-player deal that sent, among others, former Oiler teammate Jari Kurri to the Kings on the March, 1996 trade deadline. McSorley was finally sent to San Jose five months later where he was hampered by several serious injuries and became a part-time player. McSorley sits third on the NHL all-time list with a career total of 3,222 penalty minutes. McSorley has played both the wing and defence positions in the NHL.
