![]() After missing the first six weeks of action due to a contract dispute, Alexander Mogilny reintegrated the Canucks on November 7, 1997, with a multi-million, four-year deal in his pocket. Although he recorded his 300th NHL goal in 1997-98, the star winger failed to maintain a point-per-game average for the second straight year. Nonetheless, he remains one of the most gifted players in the league. One of the first Soviet hockey players to defect to the NHL (in May of 1989), Mogilny enjoyed his best NHL season as a Buffalo Sabre in 1992-93 when he banked 76 goals and registered a total of 127 points in 77 games. In July of 1995, Mogilny came to the Canucks in a deal that saw Mike Peca, Mike Wilson and the Canucks' first-round draft choice go the other way. Mogilny holds Buffalo season-records in goals (76) and shots (360), and is tied for game-winning goals (11) and hat tricks (seven). Mogilny joined the Central Red Army at age 17, and won a gold medal as a member of the Soviet national team at the 1988 Olympics, becoming the youngest Soviet ever to do so. He also played for the Soviet team at the world junior championships in 1987, 1988, and 1989. For more on Alexander Mogilny, check out Hockey PLUS |
