![]() A week after kickstarting contract talks with former Ottawa GM Pierre Gauthier (now with Anaheim), Phillips--a standout defenceman picked No. 1 overall in 1996--ended a year-long tug-of-war in August of 1997 by signing a three-year contract with the Senators. Phillips, who announced in June of 1997 he would return to the WHL's Lethbridge Hurricanes and re-enter the draft in 1998 if his contractual demands weren't met, finally started the 1997-98 season in Ottawa where he recorded five goals and 16 points in 72 games. Despite a solid and promising season, Phillips received but a sole Calder Trophy fifth-place vote and finished well back of the winner, Boston's Sergei Samsonov. After one season with Prince Albert of the WHL, Phillips moved to Lethbridge in 1996-97 where he was voted the league's top defenceman, leading his team to the Memorial Cup finals. Phillips won the gold medal with Team Canada at the 1997 world junior championships. For more on Chris Phillips, check out Hockey PLUS |
