Hurricanes ink Marek Malik
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- The Carolina Hurricanes helped solidify their defense Monday, signing Marek Malik to a multiyear contract.
The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Malik had two goals and nine assists in 52 games last season after being recalled from the minors on Dec. 8, 1998.
In four NHL seasons, Malik has three goals, 15 assists and 90 penalty minutes in 107 games.
"Marek has made consistent improvement since first joining the organization and is coming off one of his best professional seasons. He has the opportunity to step up and be among our top defensemen," Carolina assistant general manager Jason Karmanos said.
The Hurricanes opened their 1999 training camp Monday in Fort Myers, Fla.
