Monday, February 1, 1999 Roy named player of the monthNEW YORK (CP) -- Colorado Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy was named the NHL's player of the month for January after a seven-game winning streak.Roy, who was coming off a knee injury that forced him to miss eight games, posted a 7-0-0 record and a goals-against average of 1.71. He had shutouts against St. Louis and San Jose. After a slow start to the season, Colorado (25-19-4) now has a nine-point lead atop the Northwest Divsion. Roy beat Philadelphia Flyers goalie John Vanbiesbrouck (5-1-2, four shutouts, 1.42 GAA); Ottawa Senators goalie Ron Tugnutt (6-0-2, one shutout, 1.01 GAA); and Pittsburgh's Jaromir Jagr (eight goals, 18 assists in 13 games) to win the honour. |
