Saturday, July 1, 2000 Guy Carbonneau retiresMONTREAL (CP) -- Dallas Stars forward Guy Carbonneau is calling it a career. The 18-year veteran, who played 13 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, told Quebec TV sports network RDS on Saturday that he signed his retirement papers on Thursday. Carbonneau made the announcement during a golf tournament he was attending on nearby Ile Bizard. "I am now retired," Carbonneau said in French. "I signed my papers two days ago. I am in retirement. I will certainly meet with the heads of the Canadiens and see what they have to offer. "I talked with (GM) Bob Gainey before leaving Dallas. They haven't specified what job they'd like me to do. But I'll weigh the pros and cons." The Canadiens are also interested in hiring Carbonneau, a former team captain. Montreal GM Rejean Houle has always shown interest in bringing Carbonneau back on board, but hasn't spoken to him yet because the forward hadn't clearly indicated his intentions for next season. In 1,318 NHL games, Carbonneau scored 260 goals and had 403 assists for 663 points. He won the Stanley Cup three times, twice with the Canadiens and once with Dallas, in 1999. Carbonneau a native of Sept-Iles, Que., won the Frank Selke trophy for best defensive forward three times.
