Thursday, November 18, 1999 Koivu out 12 weeks after shoulder surgeryMONTREAL (CP) -- Saku Koivu will be out of action for at least 12 weeks after having surgery to repair a dislocated left shoulder, the Montreal Canadiens said Thursday. The Canadiens' captain and first-line centre underwent arthroscopic surgery on the shoulder. Koivu, 24, whose five-year NHL career has been plagued by injuries, returned last Saturday after sitting out five games with what was described as a sprained shoulder. He aggravated the injury in the third period of Montreal's 4-2 win over the expansion Atlanta Thrashers. It was crushing news for the injury-riddled Canadiens, who had learned Wednesday that right-winger Turner Stevenson would be out indefinitely with a disc problem in his lower back. Stevenson was examined in Los Angeles on Thursday by back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins. A team spokesman said results of the exam were not yet known. Stevenson has been playing with a sore back all season. The most recent injuries left the Canadiens down six veterans for a game Thursday night in Nashville. Koivu had two goals and 11 assists in 13 games. Stevenson had one assist in 17 games. Other injured Habs include defencemen Vladimir Malakhov, out four months after knee surgery; Patrice Brisebois, out indefinitely after back surgery; Igor Ulanov, a broken foot; and forward Benoit Brunet, out indefinitely with a sore back.
