Savage hurt on check from Laperriere

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Montreal right wing Brian Savage sustained an upper back injury after taking a thunderous check from Ian Laperriere in the Canadiens' game against Los Angeles on Saturday night.

Savage was removed from the ice on a stretcher, and taken to Centinela Hospital. He was conscious when he left the playing surface.

The incident took place with 15:40 left in the second period and Montreal ahead 2-1. Savage skated into the Kings' zone, wound up for a 35-foot slap shot and fanned on the shot, keeping his head down on the follow through.

Laperriere readied himself for the collision and his right shoulder came up under Savage's chin, causing the Montreal player's neck to snap violently backward. He lay there for about nine minutes before medical personnel wheeled him off.

Savage has a team-high 12 goals in 21 games this season for the injury-riddled Canadiens, who already have Saku Koivu, Vladimir Malakhov, Patrice Brisebois, Benoit Brunet, Igor Ulanov and Turner Stevenson on the sidelines. MONTREAL CANADIENS
