Wednesday, October 27, 1999 Habs humiliate SavardMONTREAL (CP) -- Serge Savard says he was humiliated at being left out of the ceremonies honouring Maurice (Rocket) Richard.Savard, a Hall-of-Fame defenceman in the 1960s and 1970s and the team's general manager for 13 years, was not invited to join a group of former Canadiens who marched on stage in tribute to Richard. "They could have asked me to go up with the others," Savard told the Journal de Montreal. "They could at least have invited me to the reception afterwards. "I stayed until the end out of respect for The Rocket, but then I left because no one talked to me. I felt humiliated. Jean Gauthier and Lucien DeBlois were on the stage. I've won 10 Stanley Cups." Gauthier played only 90 games and DeBlois only 112, both in marginal roles, for the Canadiens. Savard and his assistants were fired four games into the 1995-96 season and relations were cool between Savard and former team president Ronald Corey, who was replaced by Pierre Boivin in September. "I thought with Corey leaving, that would be over," added Savard, who got tickets to the event from Richard's agent, Jean Roy. Pierre Bouchard, president of the Canadiens alumni association and a friend of Savard, said it was an oversight.
