Thursday, January 20, 2000 Rangers trying to deal Kevin StevensRALEIGH, N.C. (CP) -- Rangers GM Neil Smith is attempting to clear a space on the roster for Brian Leetch's return next week by dealing Kevin Stevens, the New York Post reports.Stevens has been consulted by both Smith and head coach John Muckler, with all agreeing that it's in the veteran's best interests to be moved in order that he can get meaningful ice time. Stevens, who will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, is owed approximately $1.75 million on his contract for the remainder of the season. The Penguins, owned by Stevens' close friend Mario Lemieux, are interested in bringing the winger back to the scene of his greatest days, but have no desire to take on even a small portion of the contract.
